Many ballmarks never healed from last season due to the cold temperatures diving in. As the greens begin to grow, it is a great opportunity to pluck the old turf out and let them heal shut. We use a probe and push down 3" and fill the channels with dry sand. This process helps jump start the surrounding turf by giving the roots more oxygen. After a few rolls and some nice temperatures, the holes will heal right shut.
This picture illustrates the finished product on a normal green. Some of the short par 4's and par 3's are a little more peppered, but from a playability standpoint will roll smoothly.
